This week in our Charity Spotlight series we chatted to Tilly, Challenge Events Fundraising Officer at the Bone Cancer Research Trust. BCRT’s incredible work means we’re getting closer to finding a cure for primary bone cancer every day.
Hi Tilly, tell us a little bit about yourself and the charity you work for
I am the Challenge Events Fundraising Officer at the Bone Cancer Research Trust. Here at the Bone Cancer Research Trust we aim to save lives and improve outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer through research, information, awareness and support. We are the leading charity dedicated to finding a cure for primary bone cancer.
What is a day in the life like as a Challenge Event Fundraising Officer at the Bone Cancer Research Trust?
I spend my days liaising with our brilliant supporters making sure they have everything they need in order to successfully fundraise for events such as marathons, triathlons, skydives, mud-runs and many more! I love hearing about all the amazing, and really varied, fundraising events our supporters plan. We are always on the lookout for new ways for our supporters to fundraise, so we were so excited when we discovered Buengo!
What is your personal motivation for working at the Bone Cancer Research Trust? What inspires you?
I first became aware of the Bone Cancer Research Trust when a young guy, called Alex, that lived nearby was diagnosed with the disease and very sadly passed away. Alex’s story was captured in an incredibly moving BBC documentary, ‘Alex: A Life Fast Forward’. This film, and the strength shown by all patients and families affected by primary bone cancer inspire me every day to help find a cure.
What is something that might surprise someone about your charity or beneficiaries?
Since The Bone Cancer Research Trust was formed in 2006, we have awarded over £2.4million to research focused solely on finding a cure for primary bone cancer. To date, we have funded 61 research project and continue to expand our research network, encouraging more researchers to focus their expertise on primary bone cancer.
What’s your favourite thing about working for the Bone Cancer Research Trust?
I love getting to know our fundraisers and supporters! Being able to support people along their fundraising journeys is so rewarding; seeing their passion and commitment to helping us raise vital funds and knowing that their support is going to make such a big difference. My absolute favourite part of the job is being able to go along to events, such as the London Marathon, and cheer on our runners. Getting to witness the moment that all their hard work has been leading up to is so special.
How can people get involved with the Bone Cancer Research Trust?
The easiest way to get involved is to head over to www.bcrt.org.uk/get-involved. Here you’ll find a calendar with all our challenge events for the year, and also fundraising materials such as ‘Bake It For Bone Cancer’ packs and lots more!
